Donna McAleer
Project Manager

Who had the biggest influence on your career & why?
My father – he had three careers in his life. After 26 distinguished years in the Air Force, he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant, honored with a Bronze Star. After retiring, he earned his Masters degree in counseling, taught high school and then became the high school counselor. Education was very important to my dad, and it is just as important to me, too.
What drove your decision to get into the marketing business?
I was finishing my graduate degree in Demography and was planning to do market research. My husband referred me to Colonial Penn Insurance for a Market Research Analyst position, where I gained valuable experience in direct response marketing. Colonial Penn sold all lines of senior consumer insurance products, and they only marketed through direct response methods, from direct mail, broadcast, and print media.
What was your most embarrassing career moment?
I was visiting a list-buying client, and sat down – but I didn't notice the chair had rolled back slightly as I was sitting down – so I went splat down on the floor.
Share a great client story.
Colonial Penn Insurance Company was experiencing a downward spiral in conversion rates due to increased competition. I heard a marketing associate complain that the Incoming Policy department was taking longer than two days to process new policies. Prior research pointed to the importance of sending out the policies ASAP – within 48 hours. Quick processing impacts policy retention and helps overcome "buyer's remorse." Without prompting, I set up an appointment with the Director of Policyholder Service. The first thing he asked me was, "Who are you?" I realized he was wondering why a market research analyst would just schedule a meeting with a high-level manager. I explained the situation with policyholder retention rates, and that moving applications the same day, if at all possible, would help keep more policyholders on the books, improve the company's bottom line, and avoid layoffs. He responded, "How can I help?" So he helped implement a new procedure, and new incoming applications took precedence every morning before any other policyholder service.
What attracted you to DMN3?
DMN3 is a direct response agency, and I wanted to stay in direct response when I moved to Houston.
In your opinion, what makes a great brand?
A history of integrity and value.
What driving career goals are you still pursuing?
To continue to learn online marketing, since this is the direct response future.
Name at least one talent that you wish you could master?
I wish I could sing better. I would like to combine that with my dancing. I would also like to go back to playing the piano, which I did through high school.
What food helps you think creatively?
Sweet tea – I can also chew on the straw while I think.
Name your biggest frustration.
When I have a great idea (which could be a great moneymaker) and I haven't sold the idea to the client or to management.
What is your all-time favorite TV program (on-air or not)?
I long for the good old days with family-friendly comedies. Usually I watch Fox News.
What is your least favorite TV program?
Jerry Springer.
When you're not working, what do you do for fun?
If I have time, I take adult tap dancing lessons.
