Conversion Optimization: Best Practices Don't Always Work

Posted by | Feb 12, 2013

If you have followed this blog for any time you know I am high on using best practices to optimize conversions. Remember though that it may not work for you.

Best practices should be viewed as a starting point for optimizing your marketing efforts. Whether it’s direct mail, offline advertising, store displays, your website, landing pages, social media, online advertising or email sends, you need to determine whether those “best practices” work for you and your audience.

Conversion Optimization: Is Your Website a Business Center?

Posted by | Mar 23, 2010

Most organizations today recognize they need a Web site. The problem is, most businesses don’t understand how to use a Web site as a business center to develop leads and sales. The result is a good looking Web site with lots of graphics and flash animation that may have brand appeal, but lacks the capability to achieve its organization's business objectives.

The fact is, the Internet is a very competitive medium with millions of new web pages being indexed by search engines every day. It is also the most metric-centric marketing medium. As a result, we have a lot of information about what kinds of things need to be part of a Web site for optimization. Types of optimization include:

  1. Search Engine Optimization - attracting site visitors is the ultimate goal.
  2. Conversion Optimization - Increasing the probability that visitors will take specific actions is the ultimate goal.

The Web site development community as a whole is still fairly uninformed when it comes to these matters, especially the issue of conversion optimization.

Website Optimization: How Important Is It to You?

Posted by | Mar 16, 2010

The role of Web site Optimization is poorly understood by many organizations with Web sites. Typically, the two most important objectives of a Web site are to...

  • Attract qualified visitors, i.e. traffic
  • Have qualified visitors take specific actions when they interact with the Web site, i.e. conversion

To achieve these two objectives, the Web site itself needs to be developed with “best practices” in mind to achieve these results. This is called Web site "optimization" in the online marketing world. These two optimization strategies are complementary in achieving business objectives. We need both a sufficient number of qualified visitors and a sufficient number of those visitors to take the actions we want. Let’s look at the two objectives:

  • Attracting visitors: Search engines are still the best way to attract qualified traffic to a website. To optimize a Web site for search engines is determining specific search word strings, i.e keywords, that describe your business offerings. These are the search terms people type in a search engine query. The objective is to rank high in the search engine page for that search term. The more competitive the term, the more difficult it is to rank high for that term.
